Cupping & Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM)
Sarah Eaton, our cupping & IASTM practitioner is currently on maternity leave
Sometimes our muscles hold onto tension a little too tightly, and massage alone isn’t enough to fully let go. That’s where cupping and IASTM can make a difference.
These techniques are designed to gently work through stubborn areas and give your body a new way to release what it’s been holding.
Cupping uses soft silicone or plastic cups to create a gentle suction, lifting and separating layers of tissue. This helps reduce restrictions, improve circulation, and leave you with a feeling of space and lightness.
Your RMT may keep the cups in one spot (static) or glide them across the skin (dynamic), depending on what your body needs. It’s common to see temporary “cupping marks” afterward—your therapist will always explain what to expect and make sure you’re comfortable before beginning.
IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) uses smooth, hand-held tools to provide a different type of pressure than hands alone can offer. This can be especially helpful in targeting tight fascia, old tension patterns, or areas that feel “stuck.”
Both techniques can be blended into your massage treatment to support:
- Releasing stubborn muscle tension
- Improving mobility and range of motion
- Relieving areas of discomfort or stiffness
- Encouraging your body’s natural recovery process
If you’ve been curious about trying something new to help your body move and feel better, cupping or IASTM might be the next step.
